Morse Code Practice

Practise Morse code four ways. Receive: hear groups of five and type what you hear, the Koch way. Quiz: hear a sign and pick it from four. Send: key letters with a straight key and see your rhythm drawn. Progress: your level and a backup file. Everything stays in this browser.

Mode

Receive: the Koch trainer

Press Start and type each sign as you hear it. Do not stop to think: if a sign escapes you, leave it and catch the next one.

Session settings

Letters at full speed, longer gaps between them.

Quiz: hear it, pick it

20 signs. Listen, then choose the one you heard, or type it. The wrong choices sound alike on purpose: B and 6, V and 4, A and N.

Send: the straight key

Hold the key for a dah, tap it for a di. Use your key on the keyboard or the large key below. Send the sign shown, and the page reads it back.

Send

Read back

Upper line: the ideal, dah three times a di. Lower line: your hand.

Progress

Your level and sessions stay in this browser only. Download a backup now and then, and load it on another device to carry on there.

No sessions yet. Your first one starts the record.

On an iPhone or iPad the file opens in a preview: tap Share, then Save to Files.

§ 1How the level moves

You start with two signs, K and M. When one session has at least 100 signs and you copy 90% of them, the next sign joins. A shorter session still counts in your record, but it cannot move the level: ten signs right out of ten prove less than ninety out of a hundred.

If three sessions in a row stay under 70%, the page suggests a slower overall speed. The level never drops by itself. You can choose any level by hand.

§ 2Two speeds

Each letter is sent at the letter speed, 20 WPM by default, so it keeps the sound it has on the air. The gaps between letters are longer, so the overall speed is lower, 10 WPM by default. This is Farnsworth spacing.2

Raise the overall speed as you grow sure of the signs. Keep the letter speed: at 20 WPM you hear a letter as one sound, not as dots to count.

§ 3Where your progress lives

Your level, sessions and answers are kept in this browser only. The page sends nothing anywhere and has no account.

Safari may erase a site’s data after seven days without a visit, and a private window keeps nothing once closed. Download a backup in Progress now and then; load it on another device to carry on there.
