§ 4Questions about N
- What is N in Morse code?
- N is a dash followed by a dot (−·). It is one of the shortest letters and one of the most frequent, so you will hear it in almost every line of plain English.
- Can N stand for 9 in Morse code?
- Yes, in cut numbers N replaces 9. Contest operators send 5NN for the signal report 599, which is much quicker than keying both nines in full.
- Does N mean no in Morse code?
- In amateur practice a lone N means no, the opposite of C for yes. The ITU abbreviation list writes NO in full for a negative answer, so you may meet either form.
